Description

This is a continuation of the work begun (and nearly completed) by @ssuriyan7 in #517.

@fxamacker This would be great to include in the next milestone for those of us who inadvertently became dependent on the behavior fixed by #503. PTAL! I implemented the suggestions you had made on the original PR but changed nothing else.
