Identifying repositories by their directory's base name by default is generally pretty standard but I would argue it's opinionated to enforce this by not providing the option of custom names. In my use-case for example, I tend to have multiple folders for a project, such as source, documentation, website, the project's name isn't "source" just because that's folder it happens to reside in.

That's why I would like to have the ability to give my repositories aliases in GitButler.
