Notes from meeting

Felon Voting Rights
possible competitor: https://howto.vote/
noticed that Democracy works has a howtovote project that lists information re: felon voting rights

Chelsea was looking at election data and surprised by how many people did not vote. Would be interesting to get voting data points such as what neighborhoods voted, what age group

  • Primary in LA was only 26%
  • Why not voting? Doesn't matter? People are over stimulated. Social media has isolated some and encouraged others
  • Need to sit down and complete ballot
  • Going to the polls - you have to do everything before getting there and in a time crunch
@chelsealensing will do further digging to see if a breakdown can be found on LA data
would be interested to see number of people voting in smaller elections and reasoning why they do or do not vote

Question: do all states let you complete a fake ballot ahead of your ballot to be prepared. Chelsea had to use another tool in Missouri to be able to complete her ballot before heading to the ballot.

Think about documentation re: closing out projects @jonlam27 @chelsealensing @kcoronel

  • N/A

Roll Call

Karen
Chelsea

Recurring items: Happens on the PM Sunday meeting

New Items

  • Holiday break work
  • Make new agenda for next week
    • Carry forward the "New Items" that we did not get to look at today

FYIs

Notes from meeting

  • During the holiday break, we will work asynchronously with the team to better understand Democracy Works projects and come up with questions/talking points for our meeting in the new year. Here is the issue we should work from Exploring Partnership with Democracy Works' Voting Information Project #509

  • @chelsealensing will be taking a look at notes of potential ideas and comparing to what they are doing, any gaps that they have, anything we can work on with them

  • @jonlam27 I tagged you on the Figma clean-up issue, if you have time that can be a holiday project but no pressure on it; we also want to get some of our ideas organized for what could be our next project idea. Notes are here.

  • Chelsea talked about finding it difficult to find free information for LA County. Digging through numerous pages of information and finding detailed information takes time LA Information. Past information was not displayed until the new November information was updated. Is this a tech issue?

Suggestions:
Look at data from bigger jurisdictions?

Meeting with Bonnie on 1/10/23:

Longevity of BallotNav

Meeting with partner has not been scheduled, no response since last outreach on 1/3/23

What would we need to do to sunset the project:

  • Right now we have domain for BallotNav
  • If we were to leave the demo open for users, we would want to show them the functionality of the application, so it needs to be updated

To-do:

  • Where is the data from the demo coming from? Where is it located within the repo?

  • Think about what its end of life plan will be

    • Overview page? Put a banner on the top - send them to a document that they save them. With the idea that someone who wants the code or to understand the project will be able to
  • Domain name cost per year is $12 a year - reach out to everyone who has been on the project

    • write up an email I want to send, after the Google Drive Audit

Create a form that tells people that we've been looking for a partner unsuccessfully, and we would love to
put together a quotes page which will be with a summary of the project
domain stay alive or create something else
what do you want to happen
how are you using site?
How important is it to people for site to live on
Do we need it to live on for 5 years?
$60 for 5years
Off the shelf resource site - are we interested in this?
anything useful at county level

Code isn't documented

This is what happened, why we stopped, and we had the intended impact
CFA - Mapbox - will need to renew it with them, so will need to chat with CFA about it
Are we using Mapbox?

Get how this is structured - devops architecture needed for a wiki

Test domain page name by visiting site, and will the about page - may not be possible to get

For HackforLA org- we should write this up for end of life/project

Potential idea:
Creating a backend so that jurisdiction could update with
Google sheet with headers and explanation for how to complete, we would import and publish
