% sudo npm uninstall handlebars -g; npm install handlebars -g; handlebars

this gives an error:

had same issue today with fresh npm install of handlebars 1.1.0

installing an older version (1.0.x) fixed it for me:
npm install -g handlebars@1.0
(installed handlebars@1.0.12 in my case)
