Terraform Version

Terraform v0.11.13

  • provider.google v2.3.0

Affected Resource(s)

  • google_container_cluster

Terraform Configuration Files

provider "google" {
  project     = "project"
  credentials = "credentials.json"
}

terraform {
  backend "gcs" {
    bucket      = "state-bucket"
    prefix      = "state"
    credentials = "credentials.json"
  }
}

variable "project_id" {
  type    = "string"
  default = "project"
}

resource "google_container_node_pool" "google_container_node_pool" {
  name               = "pool1"
  project            = "${var.project_id}"
  location           = "europe-west4"
  cluster            = "${google_container_cluster.cluster.name}"
  initial_node_count = "1"
}

resource "google_container_cluster" "cluster" {
  name                     = "cluster"
  project                  = "${var.project_id}"
  location                 = "europe-west4"
  remove_default_node_pool = true
  initial_node_count       = 1

  network    = "default"
  subnetwork = "default"
}

Debug Output

https://gist.github.com/bastiandg/79b896a8d45120b9bceb6f15cb136c7b

Expected Behavior

A cluster with the default network should be created.

Actual Behavior

Terraform claims no region or zone is configured:

* google_container_cluster.cluster: Cannot determine region: set in this resource, or set provider-level 'region' or 'zone'.

For more details see the trace log.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. terraform apply

Important Factoids

Applying only fails if the default network is mentioned explicitly .

The implicit configuration via the network parameter omission works flawlessly.
