How can I gets the index position of the cursor in the input box?

Is there a way to get the index position of the cursor in the input box?

I have not found a way to get that information via any of the get_item_* functions. A function for getting that information is also something that I would like to see implemented. My use case would be the implementation of a suggestion/auto-complete system. The ability to set the position of the caret would also be useful for this use case.

Certain scenarios could currently be handled by a workaround based on comparing the previous and current values of the text input widget. However, the user could move the caret without typing and that scenario would not be supported by this approach.

It's currently not supported natively yet but will be with the upcoming text editor widget.

Just to check, this text editor is not available in 1.8.0? I have not found it on the documentation.
