Advertising on the official neofetch repo #168
Comments
This is the specific text I see over there. |
Thank you for reaching out, I truly respect dylanaraps and the original neofetch project. My intention was never to replace the original project, but to provide an avenue for those looking for certain features and updates that haven't been incorporated in the neofetch repo due to its inactive state. I haven't received explicit permission from dylanaraps to mention HyFetch in pull requests. However, my intent is to simply inform contributors that their efforts and contributions can still find a home and be appreciated in an active project. I understand the concerns, and if there is feedback or if it comes across as too aggressive, I'm happy to adjust the approach. I'm grateful to dylanaraps for the work done on neofetch and hope to carry on the crowdsourced spirit of the project, ensuring that contributors feel their efforts aren't going unnoticed. |
I would definitely try to get permission from them before continuing. |
I just sent Dylan an email, I look forward to the response. |
Good luck with that. Dudes been incongnito for two years and doesn't even answer his community. I keep in touch with my very small community; I couldn't imagine just disappearing on them without some notice. Or being completely unable to answer them after disappearing. I'd say keep at it because if Dylan cared about the shit he wrote, he'd be checking up on it, but he's not. He clearly expected the community to takeover without intent to help. It bothers me a lot because I look up to dylanaraps a lot. That's really what got me into coding. Saddens me to see a waste of such a well-built community. Dylan should have let everyone know it'll be years before hes back but all he did was say nothing. His top contributors such as Dylin don't have a clue where he went or why. Just odd as hell to me. My community will always have a lot of friends in it for me that can always reach out to me personally. If he didn't update his status 2 months ago; I'd have assumed he was in trouble or dead |
Yeah but it's still advertising on someone else's repo without their consent, if Dylan doesn't reply you can't just assume they're okay with it. |
Neofetch is FOSS. While it is polite to ask, maintaining a project is more important. FOSS belongs to the community, and the community is moving. In short: Yes. Yes, you can. |
What? It doesn't matter if it's FOSS or not the repository belongs to dylanaraps and you should get permission. |
The repository is essentially abandoned, and has been for a very long time now. If Dylan doesn't like it, they'll clarify or stop it themselves. Under the current license we can infer that Dylan is a proponent of FOSS principles, and would be fine with this because of the goal behind the project. |
Just because he hasn't said he doesn't like it doesn't mean he does. If dylan isn't operating the repo, you can't just assume that he's okay with someone plastering ads for a replacement on his repo. |
Hey, I was just curious since I see this project mentioned on basically every PR on the official neofetch repo, which is basically just an ad for hyfetch. Did this project get permission from dylanaraps to do this?
Again, just curious, thank you!
