It's the only sane way to handle the image content being different. Features should be able to rely on asset metadata being accurate and not left behind from the previous asset. Maybe editable attributes like date and location could be handled differently. |

I have used this feature specifically to update the metadata of existing photos in Immich. Source photos were missing date, so I changed the dates using exiftool and uploaded with replace. I think you should rather find a way to edit your photos while preserving metadata. |

I have searched the existing feature requests to make sure this is not a duplicate request.
The feature
In the current state of the software, there is no web option to edit photos, so in the mean time, I am relying on the "replace with upload" option to do any edits. the main edit I am doing is going through and changing orientation. I download the photo, do my edit, then use "replace with upload". This task is doubled by this feature overwriting the meta data. i have to snip it to the side and reinput it. I think this is only when the data was originally pulled from the photo (which is probably most of the time for me).
I think that if you are using the replace photo feature, it would make sense that the meta data doesn't need to be pulled from the new photo (that inevitably says it was created the day I edited it). Correct me if I am wrong, but i think that is the intended use for such a feature. right now, I might as well be just moving the old version to the trash and uploading a new copy as it stands.
