Quake mode hide on esc key

I was hoping you might be able to tell me how I can alter the configuration to hide the quake panel using esc. My goal would be to have it exhibit the same functional behavior as if I were to click the icon in the shell to hide--thereby keeping the session alive and not requiring my using the mouse to hide it.

@ivoarch any thoughts? Sorry to pester, but it would be really helpful for me if you don't mind helping me figure out how to do this--I find that this would provide me a slight marginal efficientcy increase and would really appreciate your thoughts and guidance on this : ) pretty please?!?! : )
