FYI haven't forgot about these changes and the upcoming new major version, it has just been a busy couple of weeks outside of GitHub.. Estimating early in the upcoming week |

Landed this manually in 8e45409 as the rollback commit included in this PR, prevents the caching behaviour to be reintroduced. |

Reintroduces pull requests #643 and #664 that were rolled back as per issue #669. To be merged into a major release.
