Pause in Spotify does not work correctly

On Catalina 10.15.3 and the Homebrew-installed Bubo, the pause action with my Bluetooth headset (Sony WH-1000XM3) does not work properly with Spotify: instead of pausing the playback, it looks as if it pauses it for a split second but then starts again (as if play/pause has been pressed in very quick succession). Curiously, starting playback from the paused state works, as does switching to the next/previous tracks.
