When making a deb package is there a way to include files under /debian/test for autopkgtest #2061

When making a Debian package, is there a way to include files under /debian/test for use in autopkgtest? I know I can add a custom control file with Debian specific options, but it is not clear to me if I can add this test directory, or how. I am new to autopkgtest and package testing in general. I appreciate any help, thank you.
