<p>Una vez descubierto el nitrógeno en el siglo XVIII, varios investigadores demostraron que la presencia de algunos de sus compuestos en el suelo tiene una gran importancia en el crecimiento de las plantas. El químico alemán <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justus_von_Liebig">Justus von Liebig</a> es reconocido como el padre de la industria <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fertilizantes">fertilizante</a> gracias a sus estudios sobre como el añadido de varias substancias -en especial algunos nitratos (los cuales contienen nitrógeno)- a la tierra produce mejoras en la producción agrícola.</p>

<p>Lo que Liebig y sus colegas descubrieron era, en parte, conocido desde hacía milenios por la sabiduría popular. Los agricultores de todo el mundo siempre han mezclado substancias con la tierra para mejorar la cosecha. Por ejemplo, en la antigua China se practicaban rotaciones de conreo de soja, debido a que bacterias presentes en las raíces de las leguminosas son capaces de transformar el nitrógeno del aire en nitratos. En la Amazonia precolombina, se utilizaba una mezcla de carbón, huesos y estiércol (<a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_preta">Terra Preta</a>) para augmentar la fertilidad de los suelos. El poder fertilizante de la materia que una vez sustentó a seres vivos ha dado lugar a episodios bastante escabrosos. <ins>Aunque parece que más por producto de su imaginación que por una realidad, el</ins> mismo Liebig, en una famosa nota, acusa a los británicos de haberse convertido en los mayores saqueadores de cadáveres de Europa con la intención de alimentar sus suelos:</p>
<blockquote><p>Gran Bretaña priva a todos los países de las condiciones para su fertilidad. Ha barrido los campos de batalla de Leipsic, Waterloo, y Crimea; ha consumido los huesos de varias generaciones acumulados en las catacumbas de Sicília [...] Como un vampiro se agarra al pecho de Europa, e incluso del mundo, chupando su sangre vital[...]</p>

<p>Para entonces, Gran Bretaña necesitaba más que nunca augmentar la productividad de sus cosechas. El país se encontraba en pleno apogeo, cabalgando sobre la máquina de vapor de la <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolucion_industrial">Revolución Industrial</a>. La población crecía, se desplazaba a las ciudades y los campos se deshabitaban. Algunos creían que el progreso humano conduciría hacia una segura utopía social. Sin embargo, otros agua-fiestas profetizaban un futuro radicalmente distinto y pesimista de la especie humana. De ellos, el más relevante fue el reverendo <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malthus">Thomas Robert Malthus</a>. A finales del XVIII, basándose en la historia hasta ese momento, Malthus recordaba que durante los períodos de bonanza la población aumentaba mientras que no lo hacían en la misma forma las provisiones para su sustento:</p>
<blockquote><p>Por lo tanto, la comida que antes soportaba siete millones debe ahora ser dividida entre siete millones y medio u ocho millones. En consecuencia, los pobres deben vivir mucho peor, y muchos de ellos deben sufrir severas dificultades. Estando el número de trabajadores también por encima del trabajo disponible en el mercado, el precio del trabajo tenderá a descender, mientras que el precio de las provisiones al mismo tiempo aumentará. Por lo tanto, los trabajadores deberán trabajar más duro para ganar lo mismo que antes.</p>

<p>Años más tarde, Liebig tampoco preveía un panorama halagüeño:</p>
<blockquote><p>Para su auto-conservación, las naciones se verán obligadas a masacrarse y destruirse las unas a las otras en crueles guerras. Estas no son vagas y oscuras profecías ni los sueños de una mente enferma, pues la ciencia no hace profecías sino cálculos. No es el si, sino el cuando, lo que es desconocido.</p>

<p>Las humildes matemáticas, que no argumentan con otra cosa que con lo que están bien seguras, otra vez no se equivocaron. La desesperación británica por conseguir fertilizantes para rejuvenecer sus agotados suelos los llevó a sacar sus peores instintos. Como veremos en la siguiente entrada, las consecuencias se sufrieron a miles de kilómetros, en las costas sudamericanas del Pacífico.</p>
