The self-calibrating magnetic compass recalibrates itself in case of a static magnetic interference ("hard iron correction"). The ferromagnetic parts around the sensor create a interference that can be modeled as an additional 3d mapping of the earth induction into the sensor channels. The firmware shall identify this interference and automaticaly compensate the effect ("soft iron correction").
