So I've been facing this issue for quite a while but never managed to narrow down and reproduce it the cause until today. Putting this issue here since I have only been facing this since switching to Cosmic (unless someone can reproduce this with another DE)

Issue:

Once steam has been launched in a session, putting the system to sleep hangs the desktop and the OS? (Cannot access TTY, no normal shutdown sequence after pressing the power button either). The only way to turn off the PC is to press the power button until the power cuts off.

How to reproduce:

Open steam or steam-gamescope in a session, play a game and close steam. Now if you try to put the system to sleep, it will show the lockscreen (with password prompt and wallpaper) and hang. Unable to access TTY, move cursor or even press the hardware shutdown button. No logs in journalctl either.

OS/Hardware

OS: NixOS 24.11.20241128.c71ad5c (Vicuna) x86_64
Kernel: Linux 6.6.63
Display (27GL850): 2560x1440 @ 144 Hz in 27" [External]
DE: COSMIC
WM: cosmic-comp (Wayland)
Cursor: Cosmic
Terminal: .cosmic-term-wr
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X (12) @ 5.45 GHz
GPU 1: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT [Discrete]
GPU 2: AMD Raphael [Integrated]
Memory: 3.14 GiB / 30.50 GiB (10%)

Edit: Forgot to mention, shutdown works fine. If I shut down the system and reboot, sleep works normally (unless I open steam again)

Can you report this upstream to cosmic-comp? This does not sound like a NixOS or nixos-cosmic issue and is likely something weird going on with cosmic-comp (but without being provided any logs whatsoever, it would be hard to say)

I'm experiencing a similar issue, but it occurs consistently—not just with Steam. I encounter the same problem on other Wayland compositors, not just COSMIC. Others also seem to face this problem. It appears to be related to an AMD driver bug:
