Documentation: thumbs attribute also working on gallery shortcode?

Hello,
I have a question regarding the thumbs attribute. From experiments it seems that it does not work when applied to the gallery shortcode, but as far as I read the documentation it should work?

It would maybe be good to extend the documentation with an example how to use the thumbs attribute with the gallery shortcode or to clarify that the thumbs attribute has to be put on the figure shortcode.
