This was a request during some oggcamp discussions, and I'm sure it's come up before too.

Please clarify. What transaction is being authenticated?

SMTP Login. Basically, allowing someone not on lug.org.uk infrastructure (e.g. someone who receives lugmaster@some.lug.org.uk, but isn't a lug.org.uk admin), to be able to send email using the lug.org.uk mail service.

To be fair, this is not a common request, but it was something I could have done with, briefly, during my tenure of organising oggcamp, and one of the subsequent organisers also asked the same thing.

For a limited number of people, then perhaps yes, but if we open it up even just to include all lugmasters this could add quite a bit more administrative work.
