Setting Entity Attribute to next running number #164

I would to set an entity attribute to a running number e.g. 1st record will have value 1, 2nd record will have value 2, 3rd record will have value 3 and so on. How do I achieve this using Custom Attribute ? Is there a variable that holds the current record count ?
