Premium extensions

Hello, since we moved to closed-source and are planning to make our extension behind payment, we are here to ask your feedback about what would be a good price to use Material Theme and Material Theme Icons.

The reason

This project has been maintained for 9 years, I've closed every issue and fixed every bug, but we didn't get many code contributions and financial contributions over this period. Since I think my time has value (like yours), and I would like to keep this project alive, we need to cover some expenses we have like domain and design tools (remember, every icon is hand-curated).

We've encountered also several license violations and clones that have affected the credibility and quality of our extensions. Also, there haven't been any contributions to our projects in 9 years, so we feel it's time for a change.

The idea

We want to keep the current version free as always, and focus on a new premium version of both extensions that offers new features, stable code, and more.

Our starting point is to define a price for one extension and a different price for the bundle. For example, payment of 3$ to use only one extension, and 5$ to get access to both extensions. There is also a possibility to give discount codes to help people migrate to the new and updated version. What do you think?

As you can see, we're talking about 25/40 cents per month, we don't want to steal from you, we're here just to ask a small support and keep this project alive, ditch low-quality clones.

what would the premium offer compared to just the free version? also i don't know many people, myself included, that would be interested in paying for a theme. if you are willing to make a paid version, i recommend a one time purchase instead of a yearly price.

i understand projects like these take time to develop, but there's just much incentive to pay a yearly price (even $5) for a theme.

Add new features (new variants, dynamic settings, dynamic/custom color for icons, gradient/flat icons setting, etc)

It's important to remember that also a car is just a car when viewed in that light. If you perceive $5/year as the cost "for a theme" rather than "for a software," then you have the option to stick with the free version.

Additionally, seeing that half of the voters selected "Other" without including a comment, it seems we'll be responsible for setting the price.

The premium version is almost complete, the Material Theme will provide a rewritten codebase with increased performance, new custom accent feature, sync icons accent with theme accent, new gradient icons, redesigned file icons, new file and folder icons.

We are now investigating and working on the distribution for the extensions.
