A suggestion for a relatively simple improvement to the protocol
Whether Whatsapp, Slack, Matrix: in any group chat, it's really hard to get notifications right. The existing options (mute for X time, mute unless mentioned or keyword, be noisy, …) are very broad, and fail to take into account the nature of individual messages, and their context.
Imagine for a second that I could configure a room to tag replies as such. Or messages containing nothing other than emojis or animated gifs or less than 5 characters to be "reactions". Or messages after a long period of silence. Or messages sent by the same person, seconds after the previous message.
Or flag messages "chitchat" by default, but let moderators elevate messages to "important" or "announcement" or somesuch.
Now, imagine everyone could configure their client to notify them only on important stuff, i.e. never notify about reactions or chitchat, but always about announcements, or messages following silence, etc..
What would be needed for this to be implemented in manageable, but flexible fashion?
