For users still wanting grammar checking, there is now vscode-languagetool which works offline by using the LanguageTool library (which may be known by some for its OpenOffice/LibreOffice extension).
@seanmcbreen your link to an alternative spell checker gives a 404, both in this issue and the README.
This repo came up as the top search result for me, so I imagine fixing the link or providing another alternative could positively impact quite a few vscode users.
This extension has had a large number of stability issues based on the availability of the underlying service.
Today, I published an update which points users to another extension for Spell Checking.
I'm closing the majority of issues and pull requests as development on the extension has stopped.
Sorry for any inconvenience this caused anyone, the good news is that there are better options out there now that don't require the service.
