Turnoff The Bootup Sound On The ROG Ally

  • Turn off your ROG Ally.
  • Turn the Ally on while holding down the volume down button until you see the BIOS screen.
  • In the Bios press Y and go to Advanced Settings, scroll down to Animation Post Logo Configuration and disable the start up audio there.
  • Save changes and exit.

Go into Armoury crate -> Content -> Settings -> Lighting -> Settings -> Toogle Sleep option.

Getting Things Setup & Updates

Note: This update process takes about 1-2 hours.

  1. Open Armory Crate (Grey Icon on the windows menu bar along the bottom), go to "Content" tab, then "Update Center". Click the button for "Check for updates". Once it is done, click "Update" on the top group and when that completes click "Update All" on the bottom group. Once all the updates are complete, restart your device. You might get a pop up to confirm you want to update BIOS and say "Ok".

  2. Open the Start menu, select "Settings" and then "Windows Update". Say check for updates and let this download and install everything in the list (you might have to click "Download and Install" to trigger this. This might take awhile but once everything is completed click the "restart now" button. Do not click this until everything is completed or you could run into issues. **Note:**If you see a update that wouldn't install, and even when clicking "Retry" it could not install. If you see this don't worry this will be fixed in step 5.

  3. After it restarts, go back to the Start menu, then settings, then Windows Update again. Say check for updates and wait to see if there are any more. If there is a "Windows Preview" type update you can click the button to download and install or leave it, I did install the latest. If you had more updates in this step, when they are all completed restart your device.

  4. Now that we have all Armory Crate and Windows Updates, open the Microsoft Store (you have an icon on your Windows Menu Bar. When it opens, click the "My Apps" icon on the left side, then click "Get Updates". This will probably take awhile too, but let everything download and install. Once all of these are complete, restart your device.

  5. After it restarts, open the "My Asus" app (start>All Apps>My Asus), and when it opens go to "Customer Support" on the left, then "LiveUpdate" tab. Click "Check" and there should be at least 2 updates. One of these is the firmware update that wouldn't install in step 2 in my case. Once it checks for updates, click "Update All" and let it run the updates. You will probably see a confirmation pop up to update firmware and click "Okay". Once these complete your device should restart.

  6. After it restarts, open the Xbox App and click the "Install Now" link where it says it needs an update. Once it completes the Xbox app will close and reopen. When that happens, open the Microsoft Store again and go to "My Apps" and "Get Updates" - it will now grab even more updates so just let it download and install all. Once this is done restart your device.

  7. You'e almost done! Once the device restarts open your start menu and in the search box field tap there and type "Disk Cleanup" and open it. Once it loads, click the button for "Clean Up System Files" and it will close and reopen. Click the checkbox next to every option (you have to scroll down to get them all" then click "Clean up". This got me back almost 15gigs on the hard drive.

  8. After that, go the the start menu and in the search box type "Defrag" and open the Disk defrag app. When it loads, click your "C:" drive and click "Optimize".

  9. Check if your time is off (bottom right corner of the Windows menu bar) - Right click (Right Trigger if you are using the built in controller) on the date/time in the bottom right corner, select "Adjust Date/Time". Check to make sure the toggle is ON for Set Time Automatically , ON for Adjust for Daylight Savings Automatically, Make sure your timezone is correct in the drop down for Timezone, and OFF for set timezone automatically. Then click the button for "Sync Now" under additional settings and that should set your day/time correctly. Note: Step 9 Fixes the issue with Xbox Game Pass not working properly.

That's it everything is up-to-date for your ROG Ally device.

Replace Armoury crate with Playnite

Disable Armoury crate on Boot/Startup

Go into Armoury crate -> Content -> Settings -> About -> Toggle the disable on boot/startup option.

Setting up Game Pass for Offline use

  • Note: Most games with a campaign mode will be playable offline, but games with network co-op or multiplayer features will not work while you’re offline. Before you go offline, connect to the Xbox network to sync your most recent game save to the cloud. While you play offline, your game save progress will continue to be saved locally, and it’ll sync the next time you sign in to Xbox. If you want to continue playing on a different device, you’ll need to go online and connect to the Xbox network to allow your local saved game to sync with the cloud again.

  • Note 2: PC Game Pass game licenses expire after 30 days when playing offline, and licenses for owned games expire after 14 days. To keep playing your game offline, go back online and launch the game. This renews the game’s license on your device and ensures you can go back to playing offline.

You can only have one device as your designated offline device. To set your device as your designated offline device:

  • Make sure that you’re online.
  • Check that your device has the latest Windows updates: Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security -> Windows Update and see if any relevant updates are available.
  • Open the Microsoft Store. You’ll be prompted to sign in if you haven’t already.
  • Select your profile icon in the upper right corner.
  • Select App settings, and then under Offline permissions, make sure that the toggle is set to On.

Once you set this, any devices previously designated as offline will be toggled to Off, and you’ll no longer be able to play games offline on those devices.

Prepare your game or games

Once your device is set up, you’ll need to launch each game you want to play offline while signed in to the Xbox network. You only need to do this once per game, and you’ll need to do this even if you’ve already launched the game on your device.

  • Make sure that you’re online, and that your device is set as your designated offline device. (See the steps above for details on how to do this.)
  • Launch the game you want to play offline. When prompted, sign in to Xbox.
  • Once you’ve started playing the game, you can exit at any time.

Repeat this process for each game you want to play offline. Once completed, you can go offline at any time and launch those games whenever you want to play them, without needing to sign in online each time.

Setting up OpenGamepadUI

OpenGamepadUI is a free and open source game launcher and overlay written using the Godot Game Engine 4 designed with a gamepad native experience in mind. Its goal is to provide an open and extendable foundation to launch and play games. It also implements a gamepad input system that can allow you to remap gamepad input to mouse and keyboard inputs.

  • Power tools (TDP control, SMT, etc.).
  • Fully configurable gamepad input (buttons, axes, mouse & keyboard, etc.).
  • Per-game customizable gamepad profiles.
  • Launch games from multiple sources.

Setting up VR on your ROG Ally

Note: While VR does work well with the Asus ROG Ally handheld performance will not be as great as VR on a modern Desktop PC. The GPU performance of the Ryzen Z1 Extreme (ROG Ally) is around 8.6 TeraFLOPs, which is close to the NVIDIA GTX 1080 (released Summer 2016) that's around 9 TeraFLOPs in graphics performance.

Quest 2

Oculus Quest 2 is a virtual reality headset developed by Facebook AKA Meta Technologies, LLC. The Quest 2 provides multiplayer games to unique social experiences to joining up with friends at a live show or instructor-led workout. With High Dynamic Range visuals and up to 120fps, as two 1832x1920 per-eye and vast 97° field of view horizontal. Oculus Quest 2 can be connected to a PC via Oculus Link, which can be performed using the official Link cable or a third party USB-C cable. This allows the headset to be used to run content from SteamVR and the desktop Oculus store. Note that a high-bandwidth USB specification (USB 3.0 at a minimum) is required to achieve a high-quality and smooth picture.

Install and Set Up Quest 2

In the Meta Quest app > select Devices > then Add Headset. Select Quest 2.

Using UBS-C Cable Link Option:

  • Select Link (Cable) as the connection method.
  • Plug one end of the cable into your Meta Quest 2 headset, and the other end of the cable into your ROG Ally device or Docking Station.
  • In the Meta Quest app, press Continue. On the screen that appears next, you can choose to test your cable connection, or press Continue.
  • Your Meta Quest 2 is now connected to your PC.

Using Air Link (Wireless) option:

  • Make sure that both your Quest 2 and your PC are on the same Wi-Fi network; Meta advises that they should be connected to a 5GHz network.

  • In the Meta Quest app on your ROG Ally, select Devices, then Add Headset.

  • Select Meta Quest 2, and then select Air Link (Wireless) as your connection method.

  • Put on your headset. Open Quick Settings by hovering over and selecting the clock on the left side of the navigation bar.

  • Press the gear icon in the upper right corner of the window that appears to open the full Settings menu.

  • Select the System box.

  • Look for Quest Link, and toggle it On. A window will appear showing all PCs on your network with Air Link available. Select your PC.

  • A pairing code will appear in your Meta Quest 2. Take off the headset and make sure it matches the code that appears on your PC’s screen.

  • Put the headset back on, and complete the pairing process.

You should be now connected. From here, you can mirror your PC’s display onto the Meta Quest 2, which will let you play any VR-compatible games, such as No Man's Sky, Half-Life: Alyx, and Star Wars: Squadrons.

SteamVR

SteamVR is the ultimate tool for experiencing VR content on the hardware of your choice. SteamVR supports the Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality headsets, and others.

Install and Set Up SteamVR

  • If you have a Steam account already, log in to Steam on the PC that you want to install SteamVR on. If you don't have Steam already installed, download it from the official Steam website, set up an account if necessary, and log in.


  • Connect your virtual reality headset to your PC. Your device will install a number of drivers; wait for the installs to finish. You should then be prompted to install SteamVR with a popup box. Press the Install SteamVR button to begin. Otherwise, if that doesn't happen, install SteamVR from the Steam Store.


SteamVR is approximately 6 GB once downloaded, so the installation may take some time. Once installed, Steam will have a new button in the top right of the window.


  • Once SteamVR is installed, you can launch it from anywhere on Steam by pressing the small VR button in the top-right corner of your Steam window. Alternatively, you can search for it on your library page. It will be listed under the Tools menu.


  • If you want to run the absolute latest version of SteamVR to ensure that you are enjoying the latest features and best performance, you can also opt-in for the SteamVR beta. To do so, search for "SteamVR" in your game Library and right-click it.

Extra Steps for Oculus Users

If you are using an Oculus VR headset, there is an additional step in installing SteamVR. You will have enable unknown sources in the Oculus App.

To do this, follow the steps below.

  • Start the Oculus App.
  • Go into Settings.
  • Click into General.
  • Find the Unknown Sources toggle and switch it on.
  • Hit Allow on the pop-up.

Adding Gyro Support

Handheld Companion is a combination of a Windows service and a touch interface optimized GUI to increase your handheld gaming computer experience.

Features include:

  • Motion control a.k.a. gyro control through a device's inertial measurement unit (IMU, Gyroscope and Accelerometer) or external sensor. Settings availible for racing, 1st and 3rd person gaming and emulator support.
  • Quicktools overlay, with easy access to various settings and information such as TDP, GPU, Screen Hz, Resolution, Brightness, Volume, Powermode control and battery level.
  • Virtual controller simulation of Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller and Sony DualShock 4 Controller.
  • Profile settings system, automatic detection of active game and applying of settings.
  • PS Remote Play support with DS4 controller, including motion and touchpad.
  • 3D Controller overlay for stream recordings.

Method 1

Turning on Hibernate for Windows 11

Use hibernation when you know that you won't use your device for an extended period and won't have an opportunity to charge the battery during that time. First check to see if this option is available on your PC and if it is, turn it on.

To set your PC so it hibernates:

  • Select Search on the taskbar, type control panel, and select it from the results.

  • Select System and Security.

  • In the Power Options section, select Change what the power buttons do.

  • Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.

  • In the Shutdown settings section, select Hibernate.

  • Select Save changes.

Now you’ll be able to hibernate your PC in a few different ways:

  • Select Start , and then select Power -> Hibernate.

Disable/Turnoff unwanted Apps on your Windows system

With Windows 11 a lot system resources such as CPU and Ram are taken up when your system starts up. There are serval ways turnoff/disable apps from auto-starting when you log-in to Windows 11

First way to stop auto-start apps is through Startup folder in the Windows settings.



Second way to stop auto-start apps is through Task Manager. Open task manager in the start menu.


Turnoff VBS

Virtualization Based Security (VBS) can slow apps (and games) down by 5 to 15% in Windows 11 especially if you're on an AMD system.

    1. Open System Information. Do this by searching for "system information" in Windows search and clicking the top result.
    1. Scroll down to find the "Virtualization-based security" row. If it says "running," VBS is enabled. But if it says "not enabled," then you're done.

Disable VBS/HVCI in Windows 11

    1. Search for Core Isolation in Windows search and click the top result.
    1. Toggle Memory Integrity to off, if it was on.
    1. Reboot your PC as prompted.
    1. Check System Information again to see if virtualization-based security is listed as "not enabled."

Disable VBS By Uninstalling Virtual Machine

If VBS is running, you can get rid of it by uninstalling the "Virtual Machine" feature in Windows. Note: that if this is the feature that's enabling VBS for you, losing it may cost you the ability to run Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2).

    1. Open Turn Windows Features on or Off by searching for it.
    1. Uncheck Virtual machine and click Ok.
    1. Reboot your PC.
    1. Check System Information again to make sure virtualization based security is listed as "not enabled."

Reset Windows 11 with ASUS Cloud Recovery

    1. Reinstall Windows on your device by using ASUS Cloud Recovery in the Advanced section of the BIOS menu.
    1. Access BIOS - Restart your ROG Ally by pressing the power button and hold the Volume Down button.
    1. In the BIOS press Y and go to Advanced Setting and select ASUS Cloud Recovery.

Reset your Windows 11 system

Resetting, reinstalls Windows 11, but lets you choose whether to keep your files or remove them, and then reinstalls Windows. You can reset your PC from Settings, the sign-in screen, or by using a recovery drive or installation media.

Reset your PC from Settings

  1. Select Start > Settings > System > Recovery .


  2. Next to Reset this PC , select Reset PC. Then, select Keep my files, choose cloud or local, change your settings, and set Restore preinstalled apps? or No.


  1. Click the Keep my files option.


    • Cloud download: Download a fresh copy of the installation from the cloud and reinstall Windows 11. However, this option will not restore the tools, apps, and configuration that came with the original image provided by the manufacturer.
    • Local reinstall: Uses the files already available to reset the computer. If this is a branded device (such as Dell, ASUS, Lenovo, etc.), this process will restore the factory drivers, settings, and tools.


  1. Click the Reset button.


Note: You will need to do Sytem Updates when this process is finished.

Restore from System Restore Point

This option takes your PC back to an earlier point in time, called a system restore point. Restore points are generated when you install a new app or driver, and when you create a restore point manually. Restoring won’t affect your personal files, but it will remove apps, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point was made.

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type control panel, and then choose it from the list of results

  2. In the Control Panel search box, type recovery.

  3. Select Recovery > Open System Restore.

  4. In the Restore system files and settings box, select Next.

  5. Select the restore point that you want to use in the list of results, and then select Scan for affected programs.

Notes:

  • If you don’t see the restore point that you want to use, select the Show more restore points check box to see more restore points.

  • If you’re not seeing any restore points, it might be because system protection isn’t turned on. Here’s how to check:

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type control panel, and then choose it from the list of results.

    • In the Control Panel search box, type recovery.

    • Select Recovery > Configure System Restore > Configure and see if the Turn on system protection option is selected.

    • If the Turn on system protection option is not selected, system protection isn’t turned on and there aren't any restore points. In this scenario, you won't be able to recovery your PC using a system restore point and will need to use one of the other recovery options listed on this page.

    • If the Turn on system protection option is selected, continue with step 6.

  1. You'll see a list of items that will be deleted if you remove this restore point. If you're OK with the deletions, select Close > Next > Finish.

Powercfg Battery Report

Powercfg is a tool built-in to Windows that generates detailed report on battery health of your Windows device.

To generate a battery report, press Windows Key + X and select Command Prompt. Then type in powercfg /batteryreport. This command saves a battery report in HTML format to

C:\Users\Your_Username\battery-report.html

Open the file in your browser and check the following parameters:

  • The difference between Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity. As batteries wear over time, the full charge capacity will be less than the design capacity.

  • Battery capacity drained over the last few days in different power states. Also, check out the battery usage graph.

  • Compare the battery life from the time you purchased the laptop and see the trends of Full Charge Capacity in relation to Design Capacity.

  • Check the battery’s usage and duration. And the time your computer ran on battery or plugged into the power outlet.
