New to search marketing topics and optimization? Here is a simplified explanation on search engine optimization to get you started on your journey.

Wikipedia definition incoming:

Get it? Got it? Nope. Okay. Don’t worry I’ll break it down for you.

First, let’s run through some of the basics.

How Search Engines Work

Let’s talk about search engines. You know, like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. The purpose of these engines is to give a user the most relevant information based on the words typed into them.

Imagine if these did not work as intended. How would you feel if you typed ‘digital marketing colleges in Michigan’ into Google and your results page looked like this:

While no one hates pizza, that has nothing to do with what you searched for.

There are complex algorithms to decide what is most relevant to a user and who deserves their place on that first page of results. You can use tips and tricks to give your a website a boost in the eyes of search engines, but make sure you put forth a lot of effort into providing quality content. It goes a long way!

Now that we’ve gotten that out the way, let’s move on to what you really came here for.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a collection of methods you can use to increase the visibility of your website on search engine results pages (SERPS). The goal is that your website shows up on that first page of results. Therefore, more people will be likely to click on your page.

Optimizing your website for search gives more web users access to your content -- which you may want for a number of different reasons. Maybe you want more people to read your blog about Russian pizza. Maybe you want more people to stumble upon your site and buy your beauty products. Maybe you want more people to watch your YouTube video pranks. Or you may even want more people to read your website about search marketing topics and optimization.

Okay I added that last one in there for myself, but the point is, if your web page is buried in page 50 of Google search results, then no one will see it.

Better SEO comes with a lot of good benefits such as:

Increased visibility - Want to gain more popularity for your site? The higher it is in the search engine ranking, the more users will see your brand and content

Easier Access - If a user is searching for your content and your website is on the first page of results, it is going to be easier for people to access your website quickly than if it showed up on the bottom of page 3 of results

More credibility - Users will be more apt to click on your page rather than others because a higher ranking is more trusted to have good content that is relevant

Search Marketing Methods

Here are some common ways to optimize your web page for search. If you want to learn more about each individual method, check out more of the blog posts.

Onsite SEO

Onsite SEO is the practice of improving search relevance by optimizing elements within the page. Elements such as site title, site description, anchor text, internal links, loading speed and more. One of the most importance onsite elements to optimize is content. Making sure users find your content relevant to what they searched for should be the ultimate goal. But all of the elements together is what makes up a good user experience on your site.

Offsite SEO

Offsite SEO is search marketing optimization done off of your website to improve search rank. This is commonly achieved through a practice called link building. When a reputable website points users to visit your website through a link, then that tells search engines that your website is probably reputable as well, or else an established website would not be linking to you. The more reputable or authoritative your website is, the higher the search rank will be. The goal is to have as many sites, preferably well established ones, linking to you as possible. You can also boost offsite SEO through social media engagement, user reviews, influencer outreach, and more.

What’s Really Important About SEO

There are many more methods to improving your search marketing optimization, but there is one thing you should spend the most effort on.

Drum roll please…

Content! Content is what people come to your website or watch your video for. Good content is what will keep users coming back or better yet, dropping links to your site for more people to enjoy.

If you publish content that will actually be relevant and useful to your users, then your SEO is already naturally improved. Relevant content is your best weapon in winning the search marketing war.

Keep in mind, that sometimes throwing every SEO technique in the book, into your writing, can leave your site unreadable and a little bit too forced.

Focus on creating truly unique and useful content and you will be well on your way!
