You're looking at the "WHATS_HERE" file for the
Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory's (GFDL) Modular Ocean Model
this file was last updated: 16 August 1993
<> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <>
The GFDL Modular Ocean Model (MOM) is a primitive equation general
ocean circulation model intended to be a flexible tool for exploring
ocean and coupled air-sea applications over a wide range of space and
time scales. MOM has been written as a collaborative effort by Ron
Pacanowski, Keith Dixon, and Anthony Rosati at the National
Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's Geophysical Fluid
Dynamics Laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey.

The directory structure for files associated with the
GFDL Modular Ocean Model looks like this:
/----- VERSION_1.0 ----- PREP_DATA
/pub/GFDL_MOM ----<
\
\---- VERSION_1.1 ----- PREP_DATA
The "GFDL_MOM" directory contains 3 files:
"WHATS_HERE" => the file you are looking at now, which is
designed to give a quick overview of the MOM files
made available on GFDL's anonymous ftp server.
"maillist_inside" => a list of MOM users here at NOAA's
Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and at
Princeton University.
"maillist_outside" => a list of registered MOM users
located outside of GFDL and Princeton, New Jersey.
Two directories are found under "GFDL_MOM"...namely
"VERSION_1.0" and "VERSION_1.1"
New users of the model should procede to the "VERSION_1.1"
directory and look at the "READ_ME_1.1" file there for
additional info about the model and files found under that
directory. The code found in file "mom_1.1" was first released
in August 1993. The "MOM_NEWS_1.1" file will contain the most
up to date info concerning the model.
The original release of the MOM code took place in December 1990.
The "VERSION_1.0" directory contains this code and other associated
files. Those who have worked with MOM version 1.0 should review
the contents of the "MOM_NEWS_1.0" file AND the "MOM_NEWS_1.1"
file, mentioned in the above paragraph.
The "mom_1.1" code should be considered an incremental upgrade
from "mom_1.0". The new code simply has all bug fixes reported
through August 1993 applied to it. The release of MOM version 1.1
was designed to alleviate the need for new users to have to apply
by hand the list of bug fixes found in "MOM_NEWS_1.0". Users of
version 1.0 may find it useful to compare version 1.1 with their
own locally modified MOM code files as a check that bug fixes have
been corrected in their code.
As of August 1993, the code and data files found in the two
PREP_DATA directories are identical.

NOTE:
Researchers using the MOM code should reference the model as
follows...
Pacanowski, R., K. Dixon and A. Rosati, "The G.F.D.L Modular
Ocean Model Users Guide", GFDL Ocean Group Technical Report #2,
(1991,1993).
Until a nice postscript version of the User's Guide is made
available, the READ_ME files will serve as our users guide.
