ESDIS DAAC Installations
This wiki page exists as a resource for NASA ESDIS stakeholders to document their experiences developing, deploying and using Sitepod or some other Sitemap generation software. It is not a static resource and it is hoped that ESDIS community members (especially those from the ESDSWG Search Relevance WG) will contribute as and when they wish to roll out Sitemap support for their Website(s).
The subsections below provide an alphabetical list of DAAC's who are working towards or have implemented Sitemap's with or without using Sitepod.
DAAC: Oak Ridge National Laboratory PoC: Daine M. Wright @eniad Sitemap Generator: Sitepod Comments: As you note, I am working on adding Sitepod to ORNL DAAC websites. I'll outline the reasons we've need a stand alone, robust sitemap generator.
A sitemap generator has been on my to-do list, but it has always been a low priority because our SE indexes and rankings seem ok. I've looked at other options, both pre-made and writing my own. Lewis's move of Sitepod to the NASA github gave me a clear choice and the push to move forward.
The main ORNL DAAC website (https://daac.ornl.gov) is a custom Perl/HTML/css/JavaScript web application. It's a complicated mix of HTML and Perl CGI pages. The crawling feature of Sitepod will be useful for the different types of pages we have. It's much more than a file listing like some of the generators I have considered.
We have other, simpler websites that use the same set up a the main site. It's been easy to get Sitepod working on those sites. I'll take the lessons learned there and apply them to the bigger task of the main site.
We have considered moving the website to a CMS, but we have instead decided improve it. We are using Drupal and Drupal's sitemap module for several sites, notably our news site (https://daac-news.ornl.gov).
