When enabled, the WindowMax Bar provides alternate set of settings for the bar to use when a window is maximized. The available settings include, Bar Color, Transparency, Margins, Border etc.
The main idea is to make the bar merge better when the desktop isn't visible (due to a maximized window) and also be minimal to stay out of the way while still retaining the style as much possible.
Note: This is a feature preview.

I'm just now using it, and I think this might be an issue (or I'm doing sth wrong), regarding WindowMax. I'm using the islands with the coloring & when maximized they remain as colored islands.

Yes, it is setup like that. Only the Bar color is changed in WindowMax bar. The button colors remain the same.
What you are suggesting is an option to make the buttons transparent for WindowMax. I will look into it.
Can you please raise another issue as a feature request so we can track it there? This one is not really an issue but a feature preview (since ReadMe wasn't playing a .webm).
