Hello, I’d like to propose the idea of adding some simple quick start presets.

We could have a folder with examples of settings that users can apply. It would be even more helpful if we included the settings used for each screenshot.

This is just a suggestion, so if it’s not possible, please feel free to close the issue.

Hello, Thanks for writing!

It is a very good idea indeed. I have considered it and is on the back burner but never really got to it. It was also discussed when the 'Import/Export Settings' option was built. Options considered included:

  • Users being able to share their favorite Open Bar themes (with screenshots) on something like - www.pling.com
  • Users could submit the themes (with screenshots) here to have a directory on GitHub where others can download it from
  • Creating a UI in preferences with some standard presets

The first two options are open and community driven with possibility of a lot of themes. I am all for it. And of course, all of them can coexist.

The third option is closer to what you are suggesting and is a good way for a new user to get started.

  • The thing is that there are way too many different possibilities and what's good is also subjective. So first and bigger issue is finding good candidates for presets. For screenshots, I set some themes as per my taste but without much thought since I needed some samples for a reddit post. In fact, I am planning to make a new post on reddit soon and very recently captured more screenshots (mostly selecting a 'bartype' and autotheming with minimal tweaks).
  • Colors: Autotheming currently picks colors from the desktop background but also depends on which of the Open bar themes are selected for Gnome Light/Dark mode. Should the preset auto apply colors from current background or should it come with preset colors along with link to corresponding background image?
  • Open Bar 2.0 goes beyond the Bar and Menus, and allows to theme the entire Shell and also Gtk/Flatpack apps so need to consider if presets should theme entire shell and Gtk apps etc.
  • Also, I really want people to try out the detailed options to be able to set the theme as per their liking but fear that with presets, a lot of users might limit to only that.

For the first point, trying to cover possible options is one way to go while simply providing some presets as samples is the other way. Maybe samples is better and easier.

Feel free to discuss here, we can try narrow down and get clarity on what would be helpful and then I will make plan to build it.

Thank you!
