I really don't think this is up to Nextcloud news to solve. There is an article...you haven't read it...it's unread. If the unread status is because you haven't paid for it is irrelevant to an RSS aggregator like this. This is a very complicated solution to a problem that was intentionally introduced to get you to pay for a service. |

So there are a few websites out there, LWN being the most prominent example, that will paywall their articles for a week or two before they go active.
It would be nice if there was some mechanism to not have these articles count towards your total unread count without having to mark them as read. One way you might implement this is as follows:
Each feed has a virtual entry marking "the present". By default, this is the first entry. Each feed can be configured such that this entry is in a different position using rules such as "the next most recent Thursday" (for LWN) or "after the 5 most recent articles". Entries above this would 1) not be markable as read and 2) not count in the unread total
