GitMate.io thinks possibly related issues are #2373 (htaccess.RewriteBase in config.php is not changing behaviour of nextcloud), #2978 (After upgrade PHP5.5.9 to 5.6.29: An exception occured in driver: could not find driver' in /var/www/nextcloud/lib/private/DB/Connection.php), #10950 (Nextcloud 14 RC 2 Installer::isUpdateAvailable() should not be called statically at /var/www/nextcloud/apps/serverinfo/lib/SystemStatistics.php#169), #180 (white screen if webserver has no read access to config.php), and #11240 (Consider openssl settings from config.php).
I guess you made a backup of config.php while you were logged in as root? config.php.orig does not belong to nextcloud. Move it anywhere else (outside nextcloud directory) and try again.
