Relevant for Python 3.13+. Requires two things:

  1. Free-threading support in Python toolchains in rules_python (tracked in Added arg for free threading support bazelbuild/rules_python#2129).
  2. Free-threading support merged into nanobind (tracked in Support for free-threaded Python wjakob/nanobind#695).

Should be doable by "just" bumping nanobind to the next version supporting free-threading, and exposing a free-threading switch mirroring the proposed CMake flag (see the linked issue in 2)).

Hi @nicholasjng -- FYI, v2.2.0 is now out that officially supports free-threading.
