Torchiana'], 'publisher': 'Routledge', 'publishedDate': '2015-12-22', 'description': 'First published in 1986. Dubliners was James Joyce’s first major publication. Setting it at the turn of the century, Joyce claims to hold up a ‘nicely polished looking-glass’ to the native Irishman. In Backgrounds for Joyce’s Dubliners, the author examines the national, mythic, religious and legendary details, which Joyce builds up to capture a many-sided performance and timelessness in Irish life. Acknowledging the serious work done on Dubliners as a whole, in this study Professor Torchiana draws upon a wide range of published and unpublished sources to provide a scholarly and satisfying framework for Joyce’s world of the ‘inept and the lower middle class’. He combines an understanding of Joyce’s subtleties with a long-standing personal knowledge of Dublin. This title will make fascinating reading for scholars and students of Joyce’s writing as well as for those interested in early twentieth century Irish social history.', 'industryIdentifiers': [{'type': 'ISBN_13', 'identifier': '9781317286844'}, {'type': 'ISBN_10', 'identifier': '1317286847'}], 'readingModes': {'text': False, 'image': True}, 'pageCount': 284, 'printType': 'BOOK', 'categories': ['Literary Criticism'], 'maturityRating': 'NOT_MATURE', 'allowAnonLogging': False, 'contentVersion': 'preview-1.0.0', 'panelizationSummary': {'containsEpubBubbles': False, 'containsImageBubbles': False}, 'imageLinks': {'smallThumbnail': 'http://books.google.com/books/content?id=oEhACwAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=5&edge=curl&source=gbs_api', 'thumbnail': 'http://books.google.com/books/content?id=oEhACwAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=1&edge=curl&source=gbs_api'}, 'language': 'en', 'previewLink': 'http://books.google.gr/books?id=oEhACwAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=title:Dubliners+by+James+Joyce&hl=&cd=3&source=gbs_api', 'infoLink': 'https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=oEhACwAAQBAJ&source=gbs_api', 'canonicalVolumeLink': 'https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=oEhACwAAQBAJ'}, 'saleInfo': {'country': 'GR', 'saleability': 'FOR_SALE', 'isEbook': True, 'listPrice': {'amount': 41.33, 'currencyCode': 'EUR'}, 'retailPrice': {'amount': 30.58, 'currencyCode': 'EUR'}, 'buyLink': 'https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=oEhACwAAQBAJ&rdid=book-oEhACwAAQBAJ&rdot=1&source=gbs_api', 'offers': [{'finskyOfferType': 1, 'listPrice': {'amountInMicros': 41330000, 'currencyCode': 'EUR'}, 'retailPrice': {'amountInMicros': 30580000, 'currencyCode': 'EUR'}}]}, 'accessInfo': {'country': 'GR', 'viewability': 'PARTIAL', 'embeddable': True, 'publicDomain': False, 'textToSpeechPermission': 'ALLOWED', 'epub': {'isAvailable': False}, 'pdf': {'isAvailable': True, 'acsTokenLink': 'http://books.google.gr/books/download/Backgrounds_for_Joyce_s_Dubliners-sample-pdf.acsm?id=oEhACwAAQBAJ&format=pdf&output=acs4_fulfillment_token&dl_type=sample&source=gbs_api'}, 'webReaderLink': 'http://play.google.com/books/reader?id=oEhACwAAQBAJ&hl=&source=gbs_api', 'accessViewStatus': 'SAMPLE', 'quoteSharingAllowed': False}, 'searchInfo': {'textSnippet': 'Acknowledging the serious work done on Dubliners as a whole, in this study Professor Torchiana draws upon a wide range of published and unpublished sources to provide a scholarly and satisfying framework for Joyce’s world of the ‘inept ...'}}, {'kind': 'books#volume', 'id': 'rQ9qzgEACAAJ', 'etag': 'q1/J7S4Xf6c', 'selfLink': 'https://www.googleapis.com/books/v1/volumes/rQ9qzgEACAAJ', 'volumeInfo': {'title': 'Dubliners Classics', 'subtitle': '( Annotated)', 'authors': ['James Joyce'], 'publishedDate': '2021-03-27', 'description': "Dubliners is James Joyce's first work and is an unflinching collection of 15 short stories depicting Dublin at the turn of the twentieth century. This peculiar and memorable novel was not published until 1914, after some small editorial concessions. However, James Joyce always refused to omit stories or change the order of them. And nothing in Dubliners is random. Each of the fifteen stories that make up its particular brushstroke to the collective portrait implied in the title: the first three speak of childhood; the next four, of adolescence; the following, from maturity; the last, of public life. Thus, we are witnessing the development - or maybe degeneration? - of this multiple protagonist who is nourished by each particular protagonist and who grows not only in terms of theme but in terms of form. Example: the stories played by children are narrated in the first person, but as soon as we pass into adolescence we find different games of narrative focus in the third person.Despite not being a novel to use, Dubliners definitely have the consistency and complexity enough not to be considered as a mere compilation of stories: it is what some critics have agreed to call "composite novel" (something like "composite novel" in Spanish). The stories, although they are totally autonomous, acquire a deeper meaning when read as a whole, and are perfectly interrelated through the combination of certain recurring factors: the city of Dublin and the oppressive effect it has on its inhabitants, the weight of religion, Irish nationalism, the omnipresent alcohol ...And also some less obvious, such as the aforementioned special organization of the stories (not only we move from childhood to adulthood, but from summer to winter), the recurrent use of violence and, more subtly, the gray atmosphere, unbreathable and "paralyzing" of all the stories. The city portrayed is a symbol of the glory desired and unreached, and impossible to achieve if its inhabitants do not change. The problem is that all the protagonists are precisely "paralyzed."', 'industryIdentifiers': [{'type': 'ISBN_10', 'identifier': '1726887545'}, {'type': 'ISBN_13', 'identifier': '9781726887540'}], 'readingModes': {'text': False, 'image': False}, 'pageCount': 144, 'printType': 'BOOK', 'categories': ['Fiction'], 'averageRating': 4, 'ratingsCount': 89, 'maturityRating': 'NOT_MATURE', 'allowAnonLogging': False, 'contentVersion': 'preview-1.0.0', 'panelizationSummary': {'containsEpubBubbles': False, 'containsImageBubbles': False}, 'imageLinks': {'smallThumbnail': 'http://books.google.com/books/content?id=gC7_vAEACAAJ&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=5&source=gbs_api', 'thumbnail': 'http://books.google.com/books/content?id=gC7_vAEACAAJ&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=1&source=gbs_api'}, 'language': 'en', 'previewLink': 'http://books.google.gr/books?id=gC7_vAEACAAJ&dq=title:Dubliners+by+James+Joyce&hl=&cd=5&source=gbs_api', 'infoLink': 'http://books.google.gr/books?id=gC7_vAEACAAJ&dq=title:Dubliners+by+James+Joyce&hl=&source=gbs_api', 'canonicalVolumeLink': 'https://books.google.com/books/about/Dubliners_Annotated.html?hl=&id=gC7_vAEACAAJ'}, 'saleInfo': {'country': 'GR', 'saleability': 'NOT_FOR_SALE', 'isEbook': False}, 'accessInfo': {'country': 'GR', 'viewability': 'NO_PAGES', 'embeddable': False, 'publicDomain': False, 'textToSpeechPermission': 'ALLOWED', 'epub': {'isAvailable': False}, 'pdf': {'isAvailable': False}, 'webReaderLink': 'http://play.google.com/books/reader?id=gC7_vAEACAAJ&hl=&source=gbs_api', 'accessViewStatus': 'NONE', 'quoteSharingAllowed': False}, 'searchInfo': {'textSnippet': 'Annotations This book is unique because it contains a literary criticism that was made by Juan AcevedoBy 1905 Joyce had already planned to write a series of independent short stories that would join Dubliners to form a compact, round work.'}}, {'kind': 'books#volume', 'id': 'lBwatgEACAAJ', 'etag': 'ScJp3a4L+vs', 'selfLink': 'https://www.googleapis.com/books/v1/volumes/lBwatgEACAAJ', 'volumeInfo': {'title': 'Dubliners', 'subtitle': 'Special Edition', 'authors': ['James Joyce'], 'publisher': 'Createspace Independent Publishing Platform', 'publishedDate': '2018-04-19', 'description': "Dubliners is a collection of 15 short stories by James Joyce, first published in 1914. The fifteen stories were meant to be a naturalistic depiction of the Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century. The stories were written at the time when Irish nationalism was at its peak, and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences. They center on Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character has a special moment of self-understanding or illumination. Many of the characters in Dubliners later appear in minor roles in Joyce's novel Ulysses. The initial stories in the collection are narrated by children as protagonists, and as the stories continue, they deal with the lives and concerns of progressively older people. This is in line with Joyce's tripartite division of the collection into childhood, adolescence and maturity. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public.
