Would it be possible to include the "Hentaigana" characters from Unicode 10.0? #241
Comments
This is out of the scope of the current Noto CJK set. |
OK, thank you for your reply. Then I will close this issue. |
We have team requests on the Google side to add this support. Re-opening this thread to track it. |
@simoncozens Mind providing a status update on Hentaigana here? Ty |
Noto Serif Hentaigana development is happening over at https://github.com/notofonts/hentaigana. As far as I know, the designer is still working on the drawings - last push was last week. But we seem to have three complete and interpolatable masters, so I think we are not far off. |
Noto CJK has reached the upper glyph limit of 65535 for the main CJK font. Will there still be enough CID space to support hentaigana when Noto CJK/Source Han haven't support Macau IVD? |
No, this is why it is being developed as a separate font. |
Noto Serif Hentaigana is now released. |
Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
It would be nice if "Noto Serif CJK JP" supported Hentaigana characters. They were included in Unicode 10.0.
Or is this out of scope?
It seems that these characters are still used occasionally in Japan. E.g., I bought a package of senbei that had "senbei" spelled with the "be" and the "i" in Hentaigana.

Describe the solution you'd like
Inclusion of the respective characters would be nice.
Describe alternatives you've considered
The alternative is to use a fallback font for these but that can look inconsistent.
Additional context
Using the font linked above as fallback:
Using just Noto Serif CJK JP:
I don't know if this is the correct way to spell せんべい in Hentaigana. I'm not a native speaker of Japanese. I was just trying to reproduce how it looked on the packaging.
