It would be nice to have a Read instance such that we can show the vector or matrix as part of another structure and read it back.

I'd love to have this! Perhaps you could contribute a patch as a proof of concept?

Rather than have a new format, I propose that instead of having the Show instance be a summary of the matrix, instead it should print the entire matrix with the generic instances of Show (so the record including the IntM structure would be printed) and then can be read with the generic instances of Read. Instead of the current Show instance, that could be instead invoked using a "summary" function or something like that.
