Trying a better approach: hosting as many of the files needed in one place on a remote server or cdn.
This version works, but setting the global base URL to the remote server needs a better solution (while trying to avoid server-side configuration and hard-coded URLs to a cdn).

Replaced fetch/await/promises implementation with old-school XMLHttpRequest() because I couldn't get things to work consistently across all browsers.
