Describe the solution you'd like
A performance test setup integrated with opensearch-benchmark which will run and report performance numbers on each commit. This will enable us to catch any performance regressions up-front.

  • Tool used: opensearch-benchmark
  • OpenSearch Benchmark Test: nyc_taxis
  • Cluster
    • 3 node cluster with each node - r5.2xlarge
  • Benchmark node - r5.2xlarge
  • Non-optimized implementation of Remote Segment Store
  • Remote translog is not supported

  • Indexing latency and throughput are impacted
  • The quick first change would be to cache list of files in remote segment store in memory

Observations

  • Indexing performance improved after caching file list from remote store in memory.
  • Deleting merged away segment files would still be impacting the performance. Deleting files in async flow should improve the performance further.
