Pre-note: Before I get into a detailed description, I wanted to get some feedback if this is something that could be added in the next few month.

Idea:
I would love to have a feature that helps me to migrate some paths to the mapping pattern where ways for cycleways and sidewalks are mapped as separate ways.

Inspiration:

  • iD added a "extract shop data from house"-feature recently that makes it easier to migrate from one to another tagging style (if the mapper decides that it makes sense to do so).
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHecYP_b3os is a great talk about the benefits of mapping such infrastructure separately.

Context:
I want to map our cycle infrastructure in much more detail. Tags like surface, width, … will make it necessary to split the way in many small pieces. This will only be manageable if the cycleway is mapped separately from the main road. Also, cycleways in Berlin almost never follow the road path directly but wrap around trees, bus stops and such.

What do you think?

I will add more details + wireframe-ideas if this has a change to happen.

@tordans I'm all for mapping cycleways and sidewalks separately. This would be a useful operation. Thanks to the contextual toolbar, we could actually add it without cluttering the UI by showing an "Extract Sidewalk" button only if the user selects a road with sidewalk tags.

However, I'll admit this would be a low priority for the core team at the moment. Hopefully our changes for iD v3 will make features like this easier for outside contributors to build!
