Oracle Database 12.2 introduced a couple new useful features when it comes to casting values to different types (providing a default) and testing whether a value is a date/number/timestamp/etc.
This issue should be fixed by providing examples for both. The hard work has potentially been completed in this post covering new features in Oracle Database 12c Release 2.
