Hello everyone! 👋
TL;DR: I would love to propose that @derberg replaces me as Executive Director of the AsyncAPI Initiative.
A bit of context
As many of you know already, I've been here since the inception of the project around late 2016. Since then, I did the best I could to make this initiative grow and become what it is today.
Lukasz joined me to work full-time on AsyncAPI on February 2020 (yes he brought a pandemic with him 😅). Right after he joined, I started delegating many of the duties and responsibilities to him. Especially, to take care of the community and make it grow and thrive. To make the community a welcoming community. And I guess we all agree that he did a fantastic job.
Most probablyFor sure a better job than I would have done, trust me.Lukasz not only made the community grow but also managed to always find more sponsors and companies willing to support our initiatives, like the AsyncAPI conference or our participation in the Google Summer of Code. This allowed us to do other cool stuff like the Mentorship program, closing the circle, and investing the money the way we think is the best: in our community.
What does it mean for him?
Well, actually, nothing will change much for him. For the last year or so, he's been doing most of the Executive Director duties, freeing me from having to do them. So yeah, I think it's fair that he gets the title. And I know he hates titles but he recently started focusing on having more conversations with companies to somehow support the initiative and this title is going to help him, for sure. In fact, when I asked him if he would accept this role, he was excited because he could change his email signature 😄 That sounds silly but it's true that corporations look at them and, if you're not a "top person", they don't even reply.
Also, in an effort to document what are the duties and responsibilities, I created this PR. Please help me add duties for him 😜 Jokes aside, really, let us know if something is missing that you think should be there.
What does it mean for the community?
Nothing changes except that now your person of reference is Lukasz, not me. So, yeah, nothing changes 😂
What does it mean for me?
Well, I love AsyncAPI so it's hard for me to do this. To some degree, it's like letting your kid grow and fly on their own. In my conversation with Lukasz, I told him: I'm equally excited and terrified 😅 In any case, I'm not leaving AsyncAPI, I want this to be clear. I just think it's healthy to rotate this role from time to time and I've been doing it for more than 6 years already. Also, he deserves it even more than me, so yeah, I just want to be fair. I will still be involved full-time but I'll be a TSC member like everyone else.
Since this is a change that we should be voting for, I'm hereby requesting all @asyncapi/tsc_members to please vote YES if you want Lukasz to be the new Executive Director or NO if you don't agree. As always, if you don't agree, please explain why 🙏
