setCustom setting entire value #699

Describe the bug
I'd like to understand why I cannot set the entire value of custom at once using setCustom

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

setCustom((custom: { someVal: any, data: any }) => {
      // custom.someVal = 'bob';
      // custom.data = data;
      custom = {someVal: 'bob', data}
    });

why can I set individual properties like the ones commented out and it works but I cannot set the entire value?
