I have "editor.renderWhitespace": "all", setting enabled and for light theme whitespaces are too contrast (they look like a code and it might be a big confusing). Rendering whitespaces should be a helpful note rather part of the code (I mean they should be slightly noticeable IMO rather than on the same level as the code):
