AFAICS, the „Back to top“ string is planned to be translatable (_("Back to top")) but I couldn't find it in the various sphinx.po files.

translation should only be maintained from the transifex webpage: https://app.transifex.com/12rambau/pydata-sphinx-theme/dashboard/

Unfortunately I have this PR on stale for a long time to improve translation management that is terrible at the moment: #1294

Until this will be merged, "back to top" will not be available for translation

OK. BTW, I requested earlier today to join the pydata-sphinx-theme translation team for French :)

It has been added recently to translation files. It's now available in transifex

Many thanks!

Is it usable now (and, if so, how?), or do we have to wait for the next release?

You need to wait for next release, I just updated the French one. Transifex will create a PR quite soon
