external command question

Is there a way to test the 'run external command' feature without fully downloading a new torrent? I am working on a shell script and I'm not 100% sure I understand the parameter values, so I'm not sure if this will work. I'm also not sure I need some of these parameters at all since there are some that look like they might include everything I want (full path to downloaded torrent file/directory)

as it stands my command is sh /share/homes/maquino/link_torrent_to_media_dir.sh "%N" "%L" "%D" > output.log

Does this look right?
