SyntaxError on iOS

Hello,

I'm trying to set up this module in my project to use with react-native-nordic-dfu. The relevant section of my code is as follows:

import DocumentPicker from 'react-native-document-picker';
...
     const bundleZip = DocumentPicker.pick({ type: 'public.archive' });
     console.log('bundle', bundleZip);

As soon as I trigger this code, I get the following error:

error: bundling failed: SyntaxError: /Users/jjd/Sources/burn/EuphoriaApp/node_modules/react-native-document-picker/src/index.tsx: Unexpected token (3:12)

  1 | import { Platform, NativeModules } from 'react-native'
  2 | import invariant from 'invariant'
> 3 | import type { PlatformTypes, SupportedPlatforms } from './fileTypes'
    |             ^
  4 | import { perPlatformTypes } from './fileTypes'

I'm not sure if to solve this I need to configure typescript in my project, configure babel, or there's some step I'm overlooking. I tried following the example project, but I'm quickly entering dependency hell trying various approaches to get this working. There is some urgency on this, as the app needs to be ready by next weekend. Please help!
