Add JRuby Support

https://docs.renovatebot.com/ruby/ definitely implies that Ruby is supported, but doesn't give a lot of detail about what versions of Ruby are supported. Ruby as a language actually has several underlying implemenation options (called "platforms") and often it's very important that the bundle command is using the right platform.

We're seeing issues where Renovate seems to decide to run its own platform, rather than the one specified in our .ruby-version file and specified by the :platform :jruby in our Gemfile.

Where Renovate is attempting to update the dependency specified here:

On a local checkout, running bundle update bigdecimal works just fine, but that's likely because which bundle shows that it's using a bundler that comes from the ruby version set by rbenv (controlled by .ruby-version) which is part of JRuby.

$ which bundle
/opt/homebrew/opt/rbenv/shims/bundle
$ rbenv version
jruby-9.4.7.0 (set by /Users/seanstory/Desktop/Dev/crawler/.ruby-version)

I expect that Renovate is just using MRI (C) Ruby.

It would be excellent if you could configure which Ruby version you wish to use, or have renovate understand the context of a .ruby-version file, and use that ruby version when running bundle install or bundle update.

Until then, it would be nice if the docs were explicit about which ruby version(s) are used, and which version(s) and platform(s) are not supported or respected.

No worries, we'll disable renovate for this repo then. Might be worth adding to the docs for the Ruby page that specific ruby versions and non-MRI platforms aren't supported?

I'm not clear on the wanted fix(es) yet. The top post says:

That's three todos:

1. Renovate reads.ruby-version file and uses the Ruby version set there, when Renovate runs bundle install or bundle update.
2. Allow user to configure (in Renovate's config) which Ruby version Renovate should use.
3. Explain in the docs which Ruby version(s) Renovate uses, and which versions and platform are supported.

Easiest fix (for Renovate users)

The easiest fix (for Renovate users) is to do 1. That also takes care of 2, and solves most of 3 because:

• The user can use .ruby-version to indirectly configure Renovate
• We only need to explain that:
  • Renovate reads .ruby-version to use the version
  • Which platforms Renovate supports

Decide scope

Before we convert this discussion to an issue, we should be clear on the scope. If we want to do all three todos, they should have an issue each.
