I found it a bit difficult to use gvm on the plane to DC. I looked at the code, but it seemed that a non-trivial refactoring would be required as you'd want to implement intelligent degrading + caching of certain information (such as the broadcast message, the installed versions of candidates, etc.)

Yep, I agree. It's high up on my list after the broadcast feature you suggested.
