Indications | Respiratory tract infection, UTI, bacteremia, septicemia, skin & soft tissue infection, intra-abdominal, burns, post-op infection. |
Dosing | Adults and children: 7.5-15 mg/kg/day divided into 2 doses infused over 30-60 minutes; neonates and premature infants: 10-15 mg/kg/day divided into 2 doses infused over 1-2 hours. For adults with life-threatening infections: 500 mg every 8 hours (Maximum dose 1.5 g/day; duration < or = 10 days). Amikacin in concentrations 0.25% (2.5 mg/ml) may be used as an irrigating solution in abscess cavities, the pleural space, the peritoneum (adults: 0.5 g/dose) and the cerebral ventricles. Intraventricular injection: 1-5 mg/day in concentrations 1 mg/mL for 3 days. Adverse Effects | Frequency not defined: Neurotoxicity (including muscle twitching, numbness, seizure, tingling of skin), Auditory ototoxicity, vestibular ototoxicity, Nephrotoxicity, Respiratory paralysis. Postmarketing: Hypotension, Skin rash, Albuminuria, hypomagnesemia, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, Azotemia, hematuria, oliguria, toxic nephrosis, Anemia, eosinophilia, leukocyturia, Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms, Drug fever, headache, paresthesia, tremor, Arthralgia, state of neuromuscular blockade, Acute kidney injury, casts in urine, increased serum creatinine. |
