we use sphinx for our documentation; would be good to know if stuff breaks before 4.0 is released!

and/or make sure we version-pin sphinx appropriately 😆

sphinx v4 is out! https://pypi.org/project/Sphinx/

We should look into if and when readthedocs is going to upgrade.
