Summary

To provide a "heart beat" feeling for the event, and similarly to how many TV news have a banner with running news persistently on the screen: make public chat messages from every venue (1000s in case of OHBM) run across the screen on the home screen.

  • each chat message would display a venue where it is posted
  • onClick for a chat message would go to that venue
  • container should be collapsible (like chat) but visible by default
  • unlike chat -- read/only (to post new message - visitor would to join that venue)
  • no delete button for messages
  • doesn't need to be super real-time: can locally buffer the messages for the last minute and scroll them at a convenient pace, does not need to guarantee that all messages are displayed (if too many available -- collapse into a "meta message" with summary like 'X messages with most in venue Y' on click to go to Y)
  • edit1 : there could be a "hidden" venue with a chat auto populated by (some) venues updating on the activities, e.g. "X people at Y tables at Z" -- then those would "natively" appear in the news feed. May be such a room then could actually be some "Event organizers Lounge" thus serving double purpose and such chat messages providing the update(s) for how event is going

Rationale

Platform already does have some elements to show "attendance" (all the user counts), and a very nice schedule navigator which gives a nice summary of ongoing events. But neither of those allows to "simulate" the "crowd roar" you might hear whenever you enter an event and there is some party going on in one of the rooms (while some others have some sleeping beauties listening to the talks). Aggregating all the messages into a single stream could immediately give the visitor idea on where to join the fun, or some messages could hint on a topic of interest to join to discuss etc.

Definitely an interesting idea. We have plans to add a ‘global chat’ that isn’t specifically tied to any one venue/private chat. I know that’s not the same as mentioned above, but they both feel sort of similar’ish in a way, so figured I would mention them.

We also have some early design plans around better ways to show the ‘energy’ from a certain venue/etc (be that by using a glow that helps emphasise, or literal sounds from that venue in the case of burning man features, etc)
