I can remember how I had been creating my first executable files on an IBM PC running MS-DOS which were printing their entire source code on -h
option. A tricky procedure as at the first glance it appears to be impossible to write source code of an executable printing it's own full exact source code (and it is ...).
It was decades ago ... at a time where the mainstream opinion about computer technology was for example that it will never produce programs able to beat a human master in chess. I didn't believe that already then. I deeply know it was only the question of time and wanted to be part of making it happen.
There were many factors limiting the time I was able to dedicate to this ambitious goal which expected side-effect was creating a chat-bot able to pretend to be me myself in a written conversation with others giving the right answers reflecting my personality and knowledge level. The main limiting factor was that I worked up to 250 hours a month in a research job and in the remaining time was busy with rising children and caring about the needs of my own family. Finally a burn-out and other severe health problems came into my way I had to resolve first before spending a single thought on programming again.
On the path from being bed-ridden for half a year to a better health I have decided to go my own way ... stopped to believe in the advise of doctors, stopped to accept proposed treatments, stopped visiting them. This made regular participation in business as an employee hard to impossible (e.g. because no attestation of being ill needing to stay home to recover from a flu was possible). But it payed out. I developed own knowledge, skills and finally even spiritual abilities I never thought that they may be possible before and had recovered and proved the level of my bodily health finishing an IronMan 70.3, a 100 km walk and achieving a 134 km distance in a 24-hours run. Considering that I was never before in my life into sportive activities a kind of a miracle.
I was contributing to Wikipedia at the time it started and as good as everyone in my business environment and family has not believed it could become a success. The idea to give information and work for free for use by others fascinated me and the years after have proven me right. I had been into stackoverflow with answering questions, mainly in the area of the Python programming language and from time to time I am still there.
The problem with giving own experience and work out for use by others for free is that it is still necessary to cover some basic costs of living like rent for a home and appropriate nutrition making the body going.
The main reason for seeking sponsorship is that after the savings from the past run out it would make my life much easier and allow to invest more time in work on helping others to achieve better understanding of and more fun, excitement and satisfaction from usage of a computer system along with enabling me to invest in replacement of the over time broken or weared out hardware components, cover the costs of Internet access and the electrical power consumed by the used hardware.
The idea of oOo is in my eyes something worth to be spread in the hope to give the individual back the power of custom usage of the purchased hardware instead of being dependent of what has been provided along with it or what is available for use with it. I would like to see Open Source to be really open for customization by anyone instead of becoming as good as closed source because only experts are able to evolve it.
