Crashes

General Guidelines

In the launcher, go to the "Configuration" tab, select "Show Data Location", and grab all log files, as well as the most recent crash dump in the "crashdumps" folder.

I have a crash in Sabatu's Tomb Raider

  • If you're in City of Khamoon, there's an unfixable issue with the level data around halfway through the level. You need to do a level skip here, unfortunately. The level skip cheat is: One step forward, one stap back (hold walk!), turn 3 times, and do a jumping stand forwards.
  • If you experience crashes anywhere else or any other issue, send a bug report please.

Immediate crash after launch, no text/graphics shown

Make sure you properly imported the data. See below.

Crash after seeing some text/graphics

  • If you're using Intel graphics... Intel won't work. Don't argue, don't try, it just doesn't work. You need a dedicated graphics card. Use Windows or nVidia Control Panel to manually configure it to use the dedicated graphics card.
  • Windows Update tends to install broken AMD drivers. Go to https://www.amd.com/support and manually install a driver from there. The PRO drivers are known to not work, and the "Optional" driver versions also make troubles sometimes.
  • Additionally, unfortunately the AMD graphics drivers after 22.5.2 are totally broken. This engine requires some advanced OpenGL stuff, and the driver rewrite of AMD introduced a lot of bugs in areas that go beyond mainstream. AMD is informed about the crashes, but it's unlikely they will fix the issues for some random open source project soon, even if some of the issues are quite serious.

Other issues

Freeze in menu

Usually an AMD driver issue. Go to https://www.amd.com/support and manually install a driver from there. The PRO drivers are known to not work, and the "Optional" driver versions also make troubles sometimes. See note above about AMD driver.

HD texture packs not loading

Make sure the texture pack isn't within a Windows-protected folder. This is usually your Desktop or the Program Files folders. Put your texture packs into your Documents or Downloads.

CroftEngine still selects the wrong graphics card after doing everything

Follow this guide from gearupwindows.com to choose a specific graphics card for CroftEngine. The guide is aimed for Windows 10 and 11.

Game data importing

  • If you downloaded a ZIP file (everything except the main game), you don't need to extract it.
  • Select the game you want to run, and then select "Import Data" on the bottom right, and follow the instructions. Links for purchasing the game or downloading the necessary data will be on the right side.
  • For Sabatu's Tomb Raider, download the latest version from the link on the right side.
  • CroftEngine will download a complete PS1-like soundtrack for the main game. If your firewall asks you whether to allow internet access, choose "yes". Except for the optional coop mode, this will be the only time where this engine accesses the internet, so feel free to block it afterwards. This will only be necessary once, except when you delete your whole data folder.
